Inspired by the contemporary minimal architecture, Sachin’s work is a poetic geometry of patterns. The artist applies various carving and folding methods to the surface of paper. In Sachin’s deft hands, the paper, devoid of colour and subject, treats the materialising forms as its very own appendages. Spacious and abundant with light, minimalism is a trait that adores the absence of narration and decor in Sachin’s art.

The series exhibited here is consciously titled The Absence and the Paper as the artist reconfirms his way of exploring the textural qualities of paper over the socio-political statements or narrative themes that a piece of art is capable of portraying. He says that he prefers not to have any words for his work. Expanse of whiteness punctuated with fine lines resulting into a marvellous play of shadows and contours is iconic of his works.

‘The Absence’ in the title refers to the lack of colours and the nonexistent narrative. Sachin believes in the purity of his medium and hence abstains from use of colours. Absence here would also mean loss of words, loss of colour, loss of thought, loss of storytelling and subject. It is interesting that the spiritual Indian texts of Bhagwat Geeta also talk about losing what you have and becoming ‘Non-entity in order to achieve singularity with higher self. This reminds us of the fact that minimalism is about unburdening life. Sachin truly finds his way to do so with his simple yet sophisticated art.
